What a weekend we have had, three teams representing our club at the Western Springs U17 Youth Tournament.
Northern Rovers was in the boys side of the competition, and made it through to the Bowl Quarter Finals before being knocked out.
Day 1 had three games with a 2-1 win over Westside Karori, 1-2 loss to Birkenhead and a 0-1 loss to hosts Western Springs. Day 2 had two round robin games where we beat Ellerslie 1-0 and lost to Melville 1-3. This put the boys in the Bowl Quarter where we took on East Coast Bays, which we lost 0-2 and was the end of the boys campaign.
Glenfield Rovers was in the girls side of the competition and made it through to the Plate Final before losing there. Day 1 for them saw three round robin games, first drawing 2-2 with Western Springs, losing 1-2 to Otumoetai and beating Eastern Suburbs by 3-0. Day 2 saw two round robin games also, both 1-2 losses to Hamilton Wanderers and Hibiscus Coast. This put Glenfield Rovers into the Plate Semi Finals on Sunday morning where they played Tauranga City and won 3-0, which lines them up with Hibiscus Coast in the Bowl Final. It was 0-0 at half time but Hibiscus got a break while we hit the woodwork. Final score was 0-2 but a great effort by the girls.
Forrest Hill Milford were also in the girls side, in the other group to Glenfield Rovers. They had a brilliant run and made it through to the Championship Final! Day 1 saw three games, beating Bucklands Beach by 4-1, drawing 0-0 with Auckland United and beating Tauranga City by 3-1. Day 2 saw their first loss, 0-1 to Ellerslie and a 5-0 win over Melville. This put them in the Championship Semi Finals on Sunday where they played Hamilton Wanderers and won 2-0! This put Forrest Hill Milford in the Championship Final, main field at midday on finals day playing Auckland United for the top spot!
The game was even, Auckland took first blood and Forrest scored back within seconds, and just before half time, Forrest scored a screamer outside the box, top corner and set the crowd alight! 2-1 up at half time. Second half was a bit messier as the girls got tired, we hit the woodwork and had our chances to put the game to rest but Auckland equalised and it was 2-2 at the end of normal time even though we hit the crossbar in the dying seconds! We went to extra time in the heat, two periods of 5 minutes and the game was still locked up at 2-2. Penalties here we go! The girls lined up and luckily for us, Auckland missed and few and after scoring our third in four attempts, the whistle blew as we had won!
